About Me
Hi, I’m April.
I’m the founder of Iser Defense and the author of The Unattractive Target.
I started Iser Defense years ago with one goal: to make personal security practical, understandable, and usable in everyday life—not just in theory, and not just for “hardcore” people.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by fear-based messaging, complicated terminology, or advice that doesn’t fit real life (kids, work, errands, normal routines), you’re in the right place.
A note about in-person classes
I’m often asked whether I still offer training in person.
At this stage of life (and with a busy family), I’ve shifted away from in-person instruction. Iser Defense is now focused on content, resources, and online learning.
That means the site is designed to help you learn at your own pace through:
- the blog,
- the terminology library,
- and self-guided online courses.
What Iser Defense is (and what it isn’t)
Iser Defense is for everyday people who want to reduce risk, build good habits, and feel more confident moving through the world.
You’ll find:
- Clear, actionable articles about awareness, prevention, and common scenarios
- A growing terminology library that explains things in plain English
- Online learning options you can complete on your schedule
- Recommended resources and gear links when they truly add value
What you won’t find here:
- Panic, paranoia, or “the world is ending” content
- A bunch of jargon without explanation
- Advice that requires turning your life upside down to follow it
My approach is simple: most people don’t need to become fighters — they need to become harder to victimize.
What you’ll find on this site
1) The Blog
This is the heart of the site: practical articles, checklists, and scenario-based guidance.
2) Firearm Terminology (Plain-English Glossary)
If you’ve ever felt lost reading firearm content—this section is for you. It’s a growing library of definitions and explanations designed to be approachable and easy to reference.
3) Online Courses (Self-guided)
My courses are built to be completed on your schedule. Some are text-first by design (because clarity and structure matter more than production value), and more formats may be added over time.
Why “The Unattractive Target” matters
The idea behind The Unattractive Target is not about living in fear or assuming danger is everywhere.
It’s about learning the small, repeatable habits that:
- increase your awareness,
- reduce your exposure to common risks,
- and make you a less appealing choice for someone looking for an easy target.
That might look like:
- better positioning and timing,
- stronger everyday boundaries,
- cleaner routines around home and travel,
- and practical tools that fit your life (not fantasies).
If that resonates, the book is the best “start-to-finish” version of my framework.
